Martin Mere Wetland Centre

The shallow pools and reed beds at Martin Mere spread across 363 acres of Lancashire wetland, and they're genuinely absorbing if you've got even a passing interest in birds. Geese, wigeon, pintail - they're here in serious numbers, especially between October and March when the migrating flocks arrive. You walk the perimeter on well-maintained paths, stopping at hides dotted round the reserve where you can watch without disturbing anything. The landscape is flat and open, which means the light changes dramatically through the day and the photography types know to come early or late.

It's a Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust site, so there's proper conservation work happening. The visitor centre has decent displays about what you're looking at, and staff know their stuff. Allow two to three hours minimum if you're serious about it; an hour feels rushed. The paths are accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs, which is helpful.

History and wildlife enthusiasts will spend a full morning here without getting bored. Kids under seven might struggle with the pace - there's no play area, and it's observation-based rather than interactive. Bring binoculars if you've got them. Winter is prime time for numbers, but spring brings breeding birds and different action. Admission is charged.

It's close enough to the caravan parks around New Lane - Leisure Lakes and Four Seasons are just a couple of miles off - to make a cracking morning activity during a longer stay. Not a headline act, but genuinely worthwhile if you're into what lives and moves in wild spaces.
