Mayflower Wood

Walk into Mayflower Wood near Billericay and you're stepping into something genuinely peaceful - ancient woodland that actually feels separate from the commuter belt just beyond its edges. The trees here are proper old, mixed woodland with plenty of cover, and it's the sort of place where you notice the quiet straightaway.

It's ideal for anyone after a proper woodland walk without the tourist crowds. Families with younger kids will find it manageable - the paths are reasonably clear, though muddy patches are guaranteed after rain. Serious walkers can spend a good hour or two threading through the trees and exploring different sections. Birdwatchers and nature types get a lot from this place; it's working woodland with real character rather than something manicured.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so it's a case of turning up and getting stuck in. Come during autumn when the light filters through the canopy properly, or spring when the woodland floor wakes up. Summer can feel a bit dense and buggy. The walk itself is free, obviously.

If you're based at Stuarts Wood Campsite or Barleylands Campsite nearby - both well-rated spots - this makes a solid half-day detour. It's close enough to Billericay to combine with a trip into town for supplies, but far enough away to feel like genuine countryside. Not Instagram-friendly, but that's partly what makes it worth the visit.
