McFarquhar's Cave

The cave sits tucked into the Highland landscape near Inverness, a modest natural feature that punches above its weight for a quick detour. You're essentially exploring a sea cave with a decent chamber inside - nothing enormous, but atmospheric enough to spend twenty minutes poking around and wondering about the geology. The entrance is the main draw: it opens onto the landscape properly, so there's actual light and views rather than descending into complete darkness.

Historically it's linked to local legend and old settlement patterns, though you won't find much in the way of interpretation on site - this is very much a do-it-yourself affair. Families with kids of walking age will manage it fine, and it's the sort of spot that breaks up a longer Highland walk nicely without eating an entire afternoon. Walkers exploring the area properly will find it worth the detour; those after showstopping geology or vast cathedral-like chambers might feel a bit underwhelmed.

The free access (assuming it remains so - do check locally first) makes it a low-risk addition to a park holiday at nearby Delny Glamping. Allow thirty minutes including the walk to the entrance and a proper look around. Timing-wise, visit when it's not raining sideways, which is easier said for than done in the Highlands. Best visited as part of a wider walk through the area rather than as a destination in itself - it's the sort of cave that rewards curiosity but doesn't demand a pilgrimage.
