Meall na Cloiche

The walk up Meall na Cloiche from Lochearnhead is straightforward enough, which makes it popular with walkers who don't fancy anything too technical. You're looking at a modest hill rather than a serious mountain - the view from the top sweeps across Loch Earn and the wider Perthshire landscape, decent rather than jaw-dropping. Allow two to three hours return for a leisurely pace, and go on a clear day or you'll have walked through cloud for most of it.

Families with older children do this one regularly. The path is generally good and the climb feels achievable without needing to convince anyone halfway up that the effort was worth it. Hillwalkers collecting Munros will skip past this entirely - it doesn't quite make the height cut - but that's actually the point. It's a solid half-day outing if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks, particularly Balquhidder Braes or Loch Tay Highland Lodges, rather than a full day's commitment.

Start early if you can. The car park fills up on weekends, and the light goes quickly in winter. The ground can be boggy in places after rain, so proper walking boots matter more than the altitude suggests. It's free to walk, naturally, and there's nothing at the summit beyond the view and a bit of peace. Worth the trip if you're in the area for a week and want something that doesn't require scrambling or serious route-finding.
