Meares Copse

A proper woodland walk through ancient Sussex forest, Meares Copse sits just outside Dorking and feels properly tucked away from the usual tourist trails. You're walking among old trees here - the kind that make you actually notice the quiet. The canopy's thick enough that even on a hot day it stays cool underfoot, with leaf litter soft on the paths.

It's not a destination with visitor facilities or waymarked loops - this is a straightforward woodland ramble. Families with primary-school kids will find it engaging enough for an hour or so, though there's nothing dramatic to keep a restless teenager entertained. Walkers after a peaceful woodland interlude, though, will properly enjoy it. The forest floor itself is the draw - moss, ferns, the occasional woodland glade.

No admission charge as far as I can tell, and you can rock up whenever. Best visited after rain when the earth smells right, or in autumn when the light filters through differently. Summer can feel a bit muggy and insect-heavy under the dense canopy.
