Meerkat

Standing stones aren't the only way to get elevated views in Pembrokeshire - this rocky outcrop near Kilgetty offers proper panoramas without the tourist crowds. The name comes from its resemblance to a meerkat standing guard, though you'll need a decent imagination to see it.

Clambering up takes about ten minutes from the nearest parking spot, and the scramble's manageable for anyone reasonably fit. Children will love the adventure of it all, though keep a close eye on the smaller ones near the edges.

From the top, you get sweeping views across the Pembrokeshire countryside towards the coast. On clear days, you can pick out the sea in the distance. It's particularly lovely in late afternoon when the light catches the patchwork of fields below.

This isn't a destination that'll occupy you for hours - most visitors spend thirty minutes taking in the views and snapping photos. But it makes a cracking addition to a day out from any of the nearby parks like Folly Farm Holiday Park or Sunnyvale Holiday Park Saundersfoot. The walk itself is free, naturally, and accessible year-round, though avoid it in wet weather when the rocks get slippery.

Walkers and families with older children will get the most from this little adventure. Just don't expect signposted paths or facilities - this is proper countryside rambling.
