Melin y Borth

Standing stones and ancient burial chambers dot this windswept corner of Anglesey, but Melin y Borth offers something rather different - the substantial remains of a working windmill that once served the local community. The structure, though partially ruined, gives you a proper sense of how these mills dominated the landscape when grain was ground locally rather than shipped in from distant ports.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to ponder here, particularly those interested in industrial archaeology rather than the prehistoric sites Anglesey is better known for. The stonework is impressive, and you can still make out the mill's internal workings if you know what to look for. Children might need a bit of imagination to get excited, though the location itself is lovely for a wander.

Just outside Amlwch, it's easy enough to reach from any of the nearby holiday parks - Mount View Caravan and Camping sits closest at half a mile away. The site appears to have free access, though don't expect visitor facilities or guided tours. Allow perhaps thirty minutes unless you're particularly keen on mill construction. Works well as part of a broader exploration of this less touristy part of Anglesey, where you're more likely to encounter sheep than coaches.
