Mynydd Eilian

At 177 metres, Mynydd Eilian isn't going to trouble any serious fell walkers, but this modest hill on Anglesey's northern coast punches well above its weight for views. The summit offers proper 360-degree vistas across the Irish Sea, with the Snowdonia peaks rising dramatically to the south on clear days.

Walking families will find this an excellent introduction to hill climbing for children. The paths are well-defined and the ascent manageable for most fitness levels, though it can get properly windy up top. Allow an hour for the round trip from Amlwch, the nearest town just a couple of miles south.

What makes this hill special is its coastal position. From the top, you can trace Anglesey's rugged northern shoreline stretching away in both directions, with Wylfa Head visible to the west. It's free to explore, naturally, and you can park roadside near the base.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Mount View or Gadfa Touring Park puts you within easy striking distance for an early morning climb when the light is best. The hill works brilliantly as a quick adventure between beach days or as an evening walk when the sun's dropping towards the horizon. Just wrap up warm - there's precious little shelter once you're climbing.
