About Melsome Wood
The woodland itself is mixed broadleaf and conifer, decent enough for a couple of hours if you're into that sort of thing. Paths wind through at a gentle gradient, making it accessible without being boring. Spring brings bluebells in decent numbers. Autumn's where it really comes alive though - proper golden light through the canopy, the forest floor thick with leaf litter. It's the kind of place where you might actually hear birdsong instead of traffic.
This works best for walkers who want something low-key rather than a destination in itself. If you're after views and drama, look elsewhere. But if you're camped at The Retreat Glamping just down the road or staying at Plough Lane or The Moors a few miles out, it's an easy morning or afternoon sortie. No entrance fee that I can find, no restrictions either - just turn up and walk.
Allow a couple of hours maximum. Kids will manage it if they're not expecting Alton Towers. The real appeal is the peace - you won't be fighting crowds or queuing for anything. It's Wiltshire woodland done simply, without fuss.
