Melton Country Park

The park sprawls across 43 acres on the edge of Melton Mowbray, which is famous for its pork pies but frankly deserves recognition for this proper green space too. You get woodland walks, open meadows, a small lake, and enough room to actually breathe without tripping over other visitors. The paths are well-maintained and mostly flat, making it accessible for families with pushchairs or anyone who doesn't fancy a slog up a hillside.

Historically it's tied to the old Melton Hall estate, though the main draws now are straightforward: walking, spotting wildlife, and just sitting by the water with a flask if the weather holds. It's the kind of place where an afternoon visit becomes three hours without you realising. Dog walkers get a lot out of it, and children won't be bored as long as they're happy splashing about and climbing trees rather than demanding an attraction with queues and a gift shop.

Free entry and no fuss - you just turn up. Early morning or late afternoon suits best if you want solitude; weekends see the usual family crowds. The Grange Camping and Caravan Park sits just 2.3 miles away, so it's an easy bolt-on to a camping holiday in the area. Eye Kettleby Lakes is even closer at 2.5 miles if you're after a dual-site trip. Winter's wet and muddy here, so October through March brings wellies and waterproofs. Summer's the obvious choice, though September mornings have their own appeal - crisp and relatively quiet.
