Melverley Meadows Nature Reserve

The path into Melverley Meadows gets properly muddy after rain, which should tell you something about what you're getting into - this is a working wetland, not a manicured nature walk. Located just outside Whitchurch in Cheshire, it's the sort of place where you'll spot lapwings, snipe, and if you're lucky, a marsh harrier quartering the reeds.

What makes it tick is the mix of open water, wet grassland, and reed beds. You can walk the perimeter, watching dragonflies in summer and listening to the chorus of frogs come breeding season. The reserve isn't flashy - no visitor centre, no gift shop - it's genuinely about the wildlife. Birdwatchers will spend hours here with binoculars. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough unless they're properly into spotting species.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a morning walk from any of the nearby caravan parks - Bramblewood is barely a mile away, making it ideal if you're based at one of those sites. Spring and early summer are peak times when the birds are most active and the wildflowers are out. Autumn brings migrating waders too.

The reserve won't knock your socks off with dramatic views, but it's proper Cheshire countryside and exactly what you need if you want to slow down and actually look at something for once. Bring decent shoes and binoculars. Leave the drones at home.
