Prees Heath Common

Prees Heath Common is one of those places that sneaks up on you - you're driving through the flat Cheshire-Shropshire borderlands near Whitchurch and suddenly there's open heath stretching out, proper wild looking for this part of the world. It's genuinely uncommon to find landscape like this round here, which is rather the point. The heath itself is managed for conservation, so you get heather, gorse, and if you time it right in late summer, it's absolutely purple with bloom.

Walkers will get the most from it. There are decent trails across the common, and it's the kind of place where you can actually breathe - no crowds, no café queues, just space. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars; you'll spot redstarts and woodlarks if you're lucky. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour unless they're the sort to turn over logs and hunt insects, but there's something to be said for letting them run about on open ground.

It's free to access and you can spend as long as you like - two hours is a solid visit if you're doing a proper walk, forty minutes if you just want the fresh air. Combine it with a bigger day out to other local spots rather than treating it as a destination on its own.
