Just outside Whitby sits a nature reserve that's quietly doing proper conservation work without any of the fuss. It's the sort of place where you'll actually spot things - birds, wildflowers, the lot - rather than just wandering through manicured paths hoping something shows up.

The reserve protects habitat that would otherwise have vanished under development, and there's something satisfying about that. You get genuine moorland and grassland here, which means it's excellent for birdwatchers and anyone who wants to understand what Yorkshire's wild spaces actually look like beyond the tourist trails. Walkers will find it rewarding - the terrain's varied enough to keep you interested for a decent hour or two, and the views back towards Whitby are worth the effort.

It's free to wander, which is brilliant. No visitor centre nonsense, no gift shop trying to flog you overpriced flapjacks. That said, it does mean facilities are minimal, so come prepared with decent boots and a map if you're not familiar with the area. Spring and early summer are best - you'll catch the wildflowers and nesting birds.

If you're based at Whitby Cliff Top Touring Park just down the road, this makes an easy morning outing before heading into town proper. It won't keep you occupied all day, but it's exactly the sort of understated addition that stops a caravan holiday from feeling like you've just pitched up next to a retail park. Real Yorkshire countryside, genuinely worth exploring.
