Merafield Nature Reserve Wood (Woodland Trust)

A proper woodland walk just outside Plymouth, Merafield is one of those reserves that rewards you for bothering to find it. The Woodland Trust manages this stretch of Devon woodland - nothing vast, but dense enough that you genuinely feel like you've stepped away from the city sprawl. Mature trees, a decent understory, and enough habitat variety to keep a keen eye occupied.

Walking through here is straightforward. The paths are manageable, mud permitting, and the whole site won't swallow hours of your time - maybe ninety minutes if you're stopping to look at birds or taking photos. Spring and early summer are when it's most lively, though autumn brings that decent leaf colour you get in southern England. Families with young kids will manage it fine; it's not a slog, but it's not manicured either.
