Merryshaws Spinney

A proper slice of ancient woodland just outside Stamford, Merryshaws Spinney is the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The trees here are old - really old - and the canopy's thick enough that even on bright days there's a cool, quiet dimness that feels worlds away from the car parks and tea shops of the high street.

It's woodland walking territory, uncomplicated and genuine. You'll find yourself on narrow paths that wind between oak and ash, the floor soft with leaf litter and moss. There are no information boards, no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of - which is either exactly what you want or a reason to go elsewhere, depending on your mood. Serious walkers and anyone after a proper forest ramble will find it rewarding. Young children might get bored after twenty minutes unless they're the type who'll spend an hour turning over logs.

Free to visit and with no set hours or booking needed, it works brilliantly as a half-morning excursion if you're staying at Rockingham Forest Park or Stamford Meadows Glamping nearby. The spinney's modest in size - don't expect a day-long adventure - but it's exactly the kind of local woodland that makes a park holiday feel less like you're ticking boxes and more like you've actually stumbled onto something real. Worth the detour if you're in the Stamford area, though it's not the sort of place that'll pull you back for a second visit.
