Mickle How

Mickle How sits on the northern fringe of the Lake District proper, a modest fell that doesn't demand much from you but rewards a straightforward walk with proper views across the Solway Firth and down into Caldbeck valley. It's the kind of peak that works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Caldbeck Camping is virtually on your doorstep at less than a mile away - and fancy something achievable without a five-hour round trip.

The summit itself is unremarkable in the way many Cumbrian fells are, but that's precisely why it suits families or anyone who doesn't fancy scrambling. You get the fell-walking sensation, genuine views, and a reasonable sense of accomplishment without needing climbing experience or Alpine fitness. From the top you can pick out the Scottish hills on a clear day, which makes the effort feel worthwhile.

Allow a couple of hours from Wigton if you're driving in, then factor another hour-and-a-half to two hours for the actual walk depending on your pace and whether you linger. Early morning is best - the light catches the Solway properly and you'll have the fell largely to yourself. It's free, obviously, and there are no facilities on the peak itself, so pack water and a snack.

Wigton itself is unremarkable as market towns go, but it's useful as a base. Combine Mickle How with walking routes through Caldbeck valley or a day exploring the neighbouring fells if you're staying at Riverside Tourer Park or Wallace Lane Farm. Not a destination in itself, but a solid morning's work.
