The fairways at Mid Sussex Golf Club roll through proper Sussex countryside just outside Hassocks, and if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Blackberry Wood is barely over a mile away - it's worth knowing what's on your doorstep. This is a members' club, so you'll need to arrange a game in advance through a member or check their visitor policy, but the course itself is a solid test without being punishing. Eighteen holes wind through tree-lined terrain with enough elevation change to keep things interesting, and the greens are well-maintained throughout the year.

Golfers will obviously get the most from it, but the setting alone makes it worth a walk past if you're camping nearby. The clubhouse has the usual facilities, and on a decent day the views across the weald are lovely. Allow a full morning or afternoon for a round, plus time for a coffee after. It's the kind of place that draws serious club golfers rather than tourists, which means it's quiet midweek and less hectic than some of the showier courses in the South East. Given the proximity to Blackberry Wood and The Secret Campsite - both cracking spots with five-star ratings - you could easily base yourself at either and arrange a round here without much fuss. Worth factoring in if golf's your thing, but not a reason to visit Sussex on its own if you're not a player.
