The best approach involves a decent trek - you're looking at a couple of hours round trip from nearby villages, depending on your route - and it's worth doing on foot to earn the panorama properly. The walk matters as much as the destination.

It suits anyone who enjoys wide-open views and doesn't mind a bit of legwork. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the hike tedious. History enthusiasts will appreciate the layers of settlement visible below - medieval field patterns, stone walls, centuries of farming in a working landscape.

Go in late afternoon when the light turns golden and the shadows in the valley deepen. Autumn's particularly good, when the tree colours pick out the river's course. Spring works too if you want the greens to feel almost electric.
