Middle Plantation

A proper woodland walk through Middle Plantation gives you proper woodland walk vibes without the tourist crowds you'd find elsewhere. It's a small forest just outside Loughborough - the kind of place locals know but rarely make it into the guidebooks. The trees here are dense enough that you genuinely feel like you've escaped, even though you're minutes from town.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not dramatic or sweeping - no cliff edges or viewpoint picnics - but that's rather the point. You're here to move through the trees, breathe the slightly damp air, maybe spot a bit of wildlife. The paths are straightforward enough, though muddy patches appear after rain. Allow an hour minimum, maybe ninety minutes if you're the sort who stops to look at things.

It works well as a leg-stretch between other activities. If you're staying at Hill Top Caravan Park or Ragdale Glamping nearby, this makes a decent morning outing before heading elsewhere. Frisby Lakes Lodge Park is a bit further out but still within easy reach. The woodland has that typical Midlands feel - working forest rather than ancient woodland, so don't expect the mystique you'd get further west.

Free access, as far as I could tell. Go early or late to avoid the dog-walker crowd that builds up midweek. Rain doesn't really ruin it here - the canopy handles drizzle well. It's not spectacular, but it is genuine.
