Middleborough Hill

Standing at 159 metres above sea level, this unassuming hill near Braunton offers views that punch well above its modest height. The climb itself is gentle enough for most families, though the final approach can get a bit muddy after rain - proper walking boots are worth packing.

From the summit, the panorama takes in the Taw and Torridge estuaries spreading out towards Barnstaple, with Lundy Island visible on clear days. It's not exactly dramatic stuff, but there's something satisfying about earning your views on foot rather than from a car park.

Walkers will appreciate this as part of a longer coastal ramble, particularly those following sections of the South West Coast Path. Families with older children (say, eight and up) should manage the ascent without too much grumbling, though toddlers might find it hard going.

The hill sits conveniently close to several holiday parks around Woolacombe and Croyde, making it a decent morning's exercise before hitting the beach. Ocean Pitch Campsite and Ruda Holiday Park are practically on the doorstep, while those staying at Woolacombe Sands or Golden Coast can easily drive over for a quick leg-stretch. Allow an hour for the round trip, longer if you fancy a proper wander through the surrounding farmland.
