Middleflat Plantation

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured country house estate, Middleflat Plantation sits a few miles out from Driffield and delivers exactly what it says on the tin - dense forest with decent trails threading through. You're looking at a mix of established woodland and newer plantings, which means the canopy changes as you move deeper in. The paths are well-trodden and navigable, though it can get muddy after rain, so boots are wise.

This is the sort of place where walkers actually prefer it to busier attractions. You won't find a café or playground or much interpretation - just trees, birdsong, and space to breathe. Families with toddlers might find it a bit underwhelming after twenty minutes, but older kids who like exploring will happily spend an afternoon here. For serious woodland types doing a circular route through East Yorkshire's quieter patches, it's proper useful.

No admission charge as far as anyone can tell, and you can roll up any time. Allow two to three hours if you're doing a full loop and stopping to notice things. If you're staying at The Paddock Pods at Homeland nearby, this makes a cracking morning walk without the drive - far easier than trekking somewhere touristy. Spring is lovely when the light breaks through the canopy, though winter walkers might find it rather bleak and exposed in parts. Come for the quiet, not the spectacle.
