Middleton Road Plantation

The woodland walk at Middleton Road Plantation, just outside Driffield, is one of those quietly satisfying corners of East Yorkshire that doesn't make it into many guidebooks - which is precisely why it's worth a visit. You're walking through proper mixed woodland here, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think rather than competing with crowds.

It's a manageable stretch for families with kids old enough to manage a woodland path without constant carrying, and walkers after a straightforward hour or so will find it does the job nicely. The trees are dense enough to feel like a proper forest, even though you're only a few minutes from the edge of Driffield. There's nothing theatrical about it - no major viewpoints or heritage plaques - which suits some people down to the ground.

Going mid-week in autumn is when this place really works. The light filters through differently, and you get the pleasure of a solitary walk without feeling you've driven to the middle of nowhere. Summer weekends can be busier, though still far from rammed.

If you're based at Wolds Glamping Pods and Shepherds Huts nearby, this makes a decent morning circuit before heading back for lunch. It's the sort of woodland that earns its place on a broader East Yorkshire itinerary rather than standing as a destination in itself. Worth the detour if you're in the area, but don't restructure your plans around it.
