Milecastle 35 (Sewingshields)

You're walking along Hadrian's Wall near Hexham when suddenly the landscape shifts. Milecastle 35 at Sewingshields isn't a grand ruin - it's the real thing, stripped down to its bones, showing exactly how the Romans built these defensive posts roughly every third of a mile along the Wall itself.

What you get here is a chance to stand where soldiers actually stood, peering out across what was then enemy territory. The remains are modest - low stone walls marking out the gatehouse and small garrison buildings - but that's precisely why it works. There's no reconstruction, no interpretation centre cushioning the reality. Just you, the Northumberland hills, and 1,900 years of history.

This spot rewards walkers far more than casual visitors. If you're tackling the Hadrian's Wall Path, Milecastle 35 makes sense as a stopping point between Hexham and Greenhead. Allow an hour to potter around properly, read the on-site markers, and actually absorb what you're looking at. The setting is proper wild - bleak, windswept, and all the better for it.

Camp nearby at either Stonehaugh Campsite or Langley Dam Glamping, and you can explore the Wall methodically without rushing. This isn't a destination in itself, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're already in the area. History enthusiasts and serious walkers will get far more from it than families after an afternoon's entertainment.
