Mill Dam Park

Walking into Mill Dam Park near Heaton's Bridge, you're immediately struck by how quietly it sits - a proper nature reserve that doesn't shout about itself. The dam itself is the focal point, creating a substantial body of water that draws birds year-round. Herons, teal, and the occasional visiting cormorant work the shallows while you stand on the banks with binoculars.

The paths loop around the water's edge without being too manicured. It's the kind of place where you can walk for twenty minutes and feel like you've genuinely left somewhere. In spring and early summer the bankside vegetation thickens up nicely - good for spotting warblers if you know what to listen for. Autumn brings migrating birds, winter can be stark and beautiful in equal measure.
