Millennium Wood

Ancient woodland that actually feels ancient - the sort of place where you half expect to bump into a forester from three centuries back. Millennium Wood is a proper working forest just outside Leicester, all mature oaks and dense undergrowth, with proper trails that meander through the trees rather than following some corporate-designed loop.

You're looking at a solid two to three hours here if you want to do it justice, though you can knock around for forty minutes and still feel like you've escaped the city. The woodland floor is thick with leaf litter - wear decent boots unless you fancy wet socks - and in spring the bluebells are genuinely worth the trip. No fancy facilities to speak of, which is rather the point. It's free to walk, and there's a car park that actually exists, which puts it ahead of half the woodland spots in the Midlands.

This works best for serious walkers and families who don't need a visitor centre and a café to justify the outing. Young kids might find forty minutes sufficient before the "are we nearly there yet" questions start. History types will appreciate the sense of continuity - this woodland has been here for actual centuries, not planted yesterday.

The forest feels properly separate from Leicester's sprawl, even though it's practically on the city's doorstep. Go midweek if you can - weekends bring the pushchair brigade, and you lose some of that forest-floor atmosphere.
