Millfield Wood

A proper Lancashire wood just outside Preston, Millfield Wood is the sort of place you stumble into expecting nothing much and come away having had a genuinely decent walk. It's a working forest rather than some manicured nature reserve, which means the paths are well-trodden but the whole thing feels real - mud on your boots, actual trees that haven't been tidied up for Instagram, birdsong that isn't competing with a café soundtrack.

The woodland itself is mixed deciduous and conifer, decent for families with younger kids or anyone after a couple of hours off the beaten track without needing to drive hours into the Lake District. The paths loop through properly, so you're not just trudging the same route back. Walking through feels like being somewhere actual rather than a tourist attraction, which is refreshing. You'll spot various bird species depending on the season, and in spring the undergrowth comes alive.

It's worth allowing two to three hours if you're going to do it properly, though you can knock out a quick circuit in 45 minutes if you're pressed. Being just outside Preston means it works well as a break from town walking or as a morning jaunt before heading to one of the nearby parks - Pointer Farm Campsite and Bowses Hill Farm are both within spitting distance if you're based out that way.

Free to access and open whenever, really. Go when it's been dry - after heavy rain it's boggy in patches. Proper footwear essential, and don't expect facilities beyond the car park.
