Millhay Wood

A thick belt of woodland just south of Crewe that gives you proper forest walking without needing to drive an hour to Peak District. Millhay Wood isn't dramatic - no gorges or waterfalls - but it's the real thing: ancient paths threading through mixed woodland, enough canopy to feel like you've actually escaped the suburbs, and the kind of quiet you don't get near Crewe town centre.

The wood is best for walkers who want something straightforward rather than spectacular. Families with primary school kids will find enough to hold attention for an hour or so - fallen trees to negotiate, stream beds to hunt along - but teenagers might find it a bit tame without a destination to aim for. There's no car park infrastructure to speak of, so you'll be relying on roadside parking and local knowledge, which is honestly part of its appeal.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper circuit. Spring is cracking when everything's in leaf, and autumn less muddy than winter. It's free, obviously - it's a wood.

If you're based at Sunny Side Touring Park or The Willows a few miles away, Millhay Wood makes a decent morning outing before lunch. It won't change your life, but it's solid local walking that beats driving off to somewhere more famous. The kind of place locals know and visitors miss.
