Mills of Pitcastle

The Mills of Pitcastle sit quietly on the River Tummel, a few minutes' walk from Pitlochry town centre, and they're the sort of place that rewards a bit of curiosity. What you're looking at are the remains of what were once working mills - grain mills, to be precise - that ground corn for the local area centuries back. The archaeological site itself isn't flashy. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no one charging you entry. You just turn up and have a look at the stone foundations and the channel work that directed water from the river to turn the wheels.

It's genuinely interesting if you care about how things actually worked in medieval and early modern Scotland, less so if you're after drama or a full day's entertainment. Walkers doing the Tummel Valley loop will find it worth a quick stop. History types might spend twenty minutes poking around and reading the landscape. Kids under ten will probably lose interest fast unless you make a game of spotting where the water used to flow.

The whole thing is free and open all hours, which is brilliant - no planning needed, no ticket queues. Allow half an hour maximum, maybe less. It pairs sensibly with a longer Pitlochry day: combine it with walks along the river, a visit to the famous fish ladder, or a stay at one of the nearby parks like Grandtully Station Campsite, barely a fifth of a mile away. If you're already in the area exploring Perthshire, these mills are worth five minutes of your time. Don't go out of your way specially.
