Millstone Mountain

Standing at 704 metres, this granite dome rewards proper hillwalkers with some of the finest views across the Mourne Mountains. The ascent from Newcastle takes about two hours of steady climbing through heather and granite outcrops, with the final push being a scramble over rocky terrain that'll get your heart pumping.

Families with older children who enjoy a challenge will love this one, though it's definitely not pushchair territory. The summit offers cracking panoramic views stretching from the Irish Sea to Slieve Donard, and on clear days you can see across to the Isle of Man. Worth bringing a thermos - the wind up here can be fierce even on mild days.

Experienced hikers often tackle Millstone as part of a longer ridge walk, but it stands perfectly well on its own for a half-day adventure. The route can be muddy after rain, so proper boots are essential. Start early to avoid crowds, particularly at weekends when the car parks around Newcastle fill up quickly.
