Milton of Forteviot

The earthworks at Milton of Forteviot don't announce themselves. You're standing in a Perthshire field, looking at what appears to be a series of low humps and ditches - but what you're actually seeing are the remains of a royal Pictish settlement from around 900 AD. It's genuinely one of those places where knowing what you're looking at transforms everything.

This was a power centre, a seat of Pictish kings when Perth was still generations away from existing. The scale is vast - the site covers several acres - and archaeologists have identified structures including what's likely a great hall and a settlement pattern that tells you this was organised, important, proper. You walk around mostly unguided, which means it feels like real discovery rather than heritage theatre.

It's free and accessible year-round, which is brilliant. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're actually interested in what you're seeing, less if you're just after a quick look. The ground can be boggy so appropriate footwear matters. Families with history-minded children will find it genuinely interesting, though you'll need to do some background reading beforehand - there's not much signage. It's roughly four miles from Perth town centre, putting it well within reach of the caravan parks scattered around the area.

The walk itself is pleasant rather than spectacular, through working farmland with views across the Perthshire countryside. It won't compete with the drama of Perthshire's bigger attractions, but if you're fascinated by how Scotland was actually shaped - the Pictish period often gets overlooked - this is essential territory.
