The abbey church dominates this corner of the Isle of Sheppey with genuine medieval presence - a working parish church that's been standing since Saxon times, though what you see now is mostly Norman and later. The interior has that proper old-church feel: heavy stone, high ceilings, and a real sense of age pressing down on you. You can wander the nave, check out the chancel, take in whatever monuments catch your eye. It's free to visit, which is decent.

Historically minded visitors will find it worthwhile - this place genuinely matters if you're interested in how churches evolved across centuries. Families with younger kids might find twenty minutes enough; adults who slow down to actually look at the architecture and any remaining medieval details could stretch it to an hour. Come weekday mornings when it's open and you'll likely have the place largely to yourself, which is far better than battling school groups.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Ashcroft Coast or Sheerness Holiday Park are both within walking distance - this makes an easy morning outing. It's not a destination in itself, but it's the sort of thing worth tacking onto a coastal stay in Sheppey. The setting feels properly removed from modern life, which is refreshing for a spot so close to Kent's holiday infrastructure. Check opening hours before you go; they're a bit patchy, and you don't want to turn up on Wednesday afternoon hoping for a look round.
