The walk into Mirk Pot Woods from Hawes takes you through proper limestone country, where the landscape shifts from open moorland into something altogether more mysterious. Once you're under the canopy, the air changes - cooler, damper, with that distinct smell of old forest floor. The woods themselves aren't vast, but they're dense enough that you feel genuinely removed from the world. The main draw is Mirk Pot itself, a natural sinkhole where water disappears underground, and it's genuinely striking once you're standing beside it. The whole thing has an almost primeval quality that catches you off guard in the Dales.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. The paths aren't marked brilliantly, so you need a decent map or a solid sense of direction. A couple of hours is realistic for a proper nose around, though you could knock it out in ninety minutes if you're just coming for the pot and moving on. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no loos, no gift shop. That's rather the point, mind you. The lack of development keeps it feeling like actual woodland rather than a managed attraction.

If you're based at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Cherish Glamping nearby, it's a cracking leg-stretcher between longer Dales walks. The area around Hawes is walker-heavy anyway - this sits nicely alongside tougher moorland hikes. Worth the detour if you appreciate gritty Yorkshire scenery, less interesting if you're after a manicured stroll.
