Mochras Lagoon

The lagoon at Mochras sits just outside Llanbedr like a secret the locals have largely kept to themselves. It's a tidal basin where small boats bob about on the water, fringed by salt marsh and backed by low dunes - the sort of place that feels genuinely quiet even when a handful of people are about. You won't find much in the way of facilities or fanfare here. It's a working marina in the loosest sense, more a sheltered mooring spot than somewhere with slick pontoons and a harbormaster's office.

For walkers and bird-watchers it's genuinely worthwhile. The marshland attracts waders and wildfowl, particularly over winter, and you can pick your way along the water's edge or cut inland through the dunes toward Shell Island, which sits a short walk away. Families won't find entertainment in the traditional sense - there are no arcades, no ice-cream vans, no facilities to speak of - but if your kids are the type who want to poke about in rockpools and spot birds rather than ride bumper cars, they'll be content for a couple of hours.

It slots neatly into a stay at any of the caravan parks dotted around Llanbedr. Shell Island itself - just under a mile away - offers a more developed experience if you fancy it, whilst the lagoon serves as a quieter alternative for an afternoon wander. Access appears to be unrestricted, though you'll want to check tide times before attempting any serious exploration of the foreshore. The whole thing has that Welsh coastal charm that requires minimal effort but rewards observation.
