Moel Gyffylog

At 482 metres, this rounded hill above the Conwy Valley won't trouble serious mountaineers but rewards walkers with proper views across North Wales. The climb from the nearest parking spot takes about an hour up grassy slopes that can get boggy after rain - waterproof boots are wise.

From the summit cairn, you'll see Snowdonia's peaks stretching south while Conwy Bay and the coast spread out to the north. On clear days, you can spot Anglesey and even the Isle of Man if you're lucky. The view west towards Betws-y-Coed is particularly lovely, with the Conwy Valley winding between forested hills.

Families with teenagers will manage this one fine, though it's probably too much for little ones. Serious hikers might find it a bit tame, but it makes a decent warm-up walk if you're staying nearby. The path isn't well-marked in places, so decent navigation skills help.

Being so close to Colwyn Bay, it fits perfectly into a North Wales park holiday. Several campsites dot the area, including Wern Farm Caravan Park just three miles away, making this an easy day trip without long drives. Allow two to three hours return, and check the weather - the summit can be windy even when it's calm below.
