Moel Maelogan

The walk up Moel Maelogan isn't dramatic - it won't knock your socks off like Snowdon does from across the valley. But it's honest work, the kind of climb that rewards you without requiring a dawn start or mountaineering gear.

You're looking at roughly two hours up from Betws-y-Coed, depending on your pace and the trail conditions. The peak itself sits at around 2,000 feet, giving you proper views across the Conwy valley and into Snowdonia. On a clear day you can pick out the higher peaks standing around like giants at a family gathering - Snowdon included. The lower slopes are forested, which means shade when the sun's out but also means the view doesn't open up until you're fairly committed to the walk.

It works best for walkers who want a decent leg-stretcher without the crowds. Families with older kids (ten plus) will manage it fine. The route is straightforward - no scrambling, just steady incline. Allow three to four hours return if you're taking it easy and pausing for a sandwich near the top.

Free to walk, obviously. The nearest base is Betws-y-Coed, which sits practically at the trailhead. If you're camping or glamping, Maenan Abbey Caravan Park is less than five miles away, and both Snowdonia Glamping Holidays and Erw Glas offer decent setups nearby. Fit this in on a decent weather day mid-week to dodge the weekend rush. Worth doing once if you're in the area for a few days - solid half-day outing, nothing more.
