Monmouth Beach

The pebbles at Monmouth Beach crunch underfoot in that satisfying way that makes you forget you're not on some Mediterranean shore. It's a proper working beach just west of Bridport, where fishing boats still come and go, which lends it a real sense of purpose rather than the manicured feel of more touristy spots along the Dorset coast.

What you get here is a long stretch of shingle backed by dramatic golden cliffs - the same geological story that makes this coastline so compelling. Swimming is decent when the swell's right, and the beach doesn't get rammed even in summer. Kids will either love hunting for fossils in the rocks or get bored after an hour, depending on their temperament. There's a small car park at the top, though it fills up by mid-morning on bank holidays.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Seadown or Newlands are both within walking distance - this is an obvious day out. The beach works particularly well as a morning visit before heading inland to explore Bridport itself, which has proper character and some excellent local cafes. Don't expect deckchairs or ice cream vans. What you do get is the raw Dorset coastline without the crowds, which frankly is rather the point.

Allow a couple of hours minimum. Go mid-week if you can. Wear shoes with grip on the shingle unless you enjoy twisting your ankle.
