Montague Hill

The walk up Montague Hill takes about forty minutes from Perth, depending on your fitness and how often you stop for photos. It's not a massive peak - you're looking at decent views across Perthshire rather than dramatic Highland scenery - but it's genuine enough and the climb feels proper without being punishing.

What you get at the top is a panoramic sweep across the Tay valley, with Perth spread out below and the Ochil Hills rolling away to the north. On a clear day it's well worth the leg work. The path is straightforward, muddy in places, and you'll pass through woodland before breaking out onto open hillside. Most people manage it fine, though it's steep enough in sections that you'll know you've done something.

This works best for walkers after a quick morning jaunt rather than families looking for a full day out. Kids will lose interest if the weather's grim or if visibility's poor - and there's nothing but views once you're up there. Allow ninety minutes return if you're not rushing.

Stay at Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site, just five and a half miles away near the A93, and you've got a solid base for Perthshire rambles. It's members-only like most Club sites, but the facilities are proper. The walk itself is free and accessible year-round, though winter ground can be treacherous. Spring's your best bet - crisp mornings, good visibility, and the path dries out faster.
