Moorymead Spring

A proper woodland spring in the heart of Hertfordshire forest, Moorymead is one of those spots that rewards a bit of searching. The water bubbles up through the woodland floor, surrounded by beech and oak, creating a small clearing that feels genuinely removed from the A1(M) chaos just a few miles away near Stevenage.

It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend hours here. But it's a cracking waypoint on a longer forest walk, and the spring itself has a genuine wildness to it. The undergrowth is thick, the light filters through properly, and there's something about finding flowing water in the middle of trees that still hits different, even in twenty-first century Britain.

Walkers will get the most from this. Kids will be interested for ten minutes, then want to move on - unless they're the type who'll spend an hour building dams, which fair play to them. History types might appreciate that woodland springs like this one have been used for centuries, though Moorymead doesn't have obvious remains or interpretation boards.

If you're staying at Church Farm Ardeley, just five miles away, this makes sense as part of a half-day woodland loop rather than a standalone trip. Free to access, no facilities to speak of. Best visited in drier months when you won't sink into the forest floor. Spring itself is lovely, but don't expect Fontainebleau - expect proper English woodland and a moment of quiet.
