About Mossdale Caverns
The cave system itself is genuinely impressive. You're descending into a limestone labyrinth with underground streams, passages that open into cathedral-sized chambers, and the kind of geological formations that make you realise how small you actually are. The going gets tight in places - narrow squeezes and scrambles over boulders - so it's absolutely not for the claustrophobic.
This is for serious cavers or at least people prepared for a proper adventure. If your idea of a cave visit is the well-lit, handrail-guided experience, look elsewhere. Families with older teenagers who don't mind getting muddy and slightly spooked will get the most from it, though younger kids will almost certainly hate the cramped bits.
Access requires arranging a trip through a caving club or guide - it's not a drop-in attraction. You'll want to allow a full afternoon, and go on a dry spell rather than after heavy rain.
Stay at either Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Wood Nook Caravan Park, both just four miles out, and you've got solid base camps for exploring the Wharfe Valley's walking and the Yorkshire Dales properly. Mossdale works as a memorable add-on rather than the main event.
