Mount Oliver Wood

The walk up Mount Oliver Wood, just outside Newent, is proper Gloucestershire - steep wooded slopes that surprise you with their drama given the gentle surrounding countryside. You're climbing through mixed broadleaf forest, mostly beech and oak, and the path narrows as it gains height. The summit isn't dramatic - there's no sudden viewpoint or café - but you do get decent views back across the Forest of Dean and the Severn Vale once you've caught your breath.

This is walkers' territory, really. It's maybe forty minutes to the top if you're not dawdling, though families with younger legs will want longer. The terrain is steep enough to be proper exercise without being technical underfoot. In autumn it's genuinely lovely, with the woodland canopy doing that gold and copper thing, though spring's probably better for seeing the ground layout and not slipping on mulch.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no car park signage I could find, no facilities - so come prepared. The nearest town is Newent, which is useful for supplies before or after. If you're camping at Pelerine, just a few miles away, this makes a solid morning or afternoon walk without eating your whole day. Don't expect drama or crowds. What you get is a genuine piece of working woodland where you'll barely see another soul, and that's the point.
