Mountsorrel Meadows Nature Reserve

The path into Mountsorrel Meadows starts unassuming enough - a gate beside the main road near Loughborough, then suddenly you're in proper countryside. This isn't some manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and gift shops. It's a working landscape where you actually see what conservation looks like on the ground.

The meadows themselves stretch across floodplain where the River Soar winds through, and in spring and early summer the wildflowers take over completely. Orchids, fritillaries, ragged robin - the lot. Birdwatchers come for the lapwings and curlews, walkers just come for the walk. There's a decent network of paths, some drier than others depending on recent rain, and you can easily spend 90 minutes to two hours here without feeling rushed.

It works well as a stop between Loughborough and the surrounding caravan parks. If you're staying at Hill Top Caravan Park or Ragdale Glamping, this is genuinely worth a morning visit rather than treating it as drive-past countryside. Families with kids aged eight upwards will get something from it - the wildlife spotting keeps them engaged, though it's not a playground.

Free to access, and there's parking near the entrance. Best visited May through July when the flowers are on show. Winter and early spring it's muddy and quieter, but the bird populations can be impressive if you know what you're looking for. Go early on weekends if you want solitude.
