Stonehurst Farm

A working farm on the outskirts of Loughborough, Stonehurst offers that rare thing - a proper glimpse into how farming actually happens, not the sanitised theme park version. You'll see livestock, seasonal crops, and real agricultural buildings doing their job rather than sitting about looking historic. It's the sort of place where you watch people graft.

The farm works on a visitor schedule rather than being permanently open to the public, so ringing ahead is essential. Most folks come for a few hours, walk around the grounds, and watch the animals being worked. There's a genuine rhythm to it - calving season brings crowds, harvest brings a different energy altogether. Families with children under eight tend to get the most from it; older kids might find it a bit slow unless they've got genuine farm interest.

Free entry or a small donation is the usual arrangement, though you'll want to check current details before heading over. Allow two to three hours if the weather's decent and you're not rushing. If you're camped at Meadow Farm Marina or Proctors Park - both just over a mile away - it makes a solid half-day outing between longer walks in the area.

Bradgate Park, three and a half miles south, gives you the grander landscape experience with its deer and ruins. Stonehurst is the working counterpart - less Instagram-friendly perhaps, but considerably more honest about what farming in the Midlands actually entails. Worth the detour if you've got the time.
