Muchelney Abbey

The ruins of Muchelney Abbey sit in the middle of Somerset farmland like something from a half-remembered dream. What remains are the walls of what was once a substantial Benedictine monastery - arches, doorways, chunks of masonry - enough to get a real sense of medieval scale even though the roof's long gone. You can wander round freely, picking out the abbot's kitchen, the refectory, traces of cloisters. The English Heritage site is basically an open field with some interpretation boards, which means you've got genuine peace and quiet rather than the usual heritage site shuffle.

Historians and architecture spotters will find plenty to occupy them - the level of detail in what's left is impressive if you know what you're looking at. Kids? They'll get half an hour out of it, maybe an hour if they're into climbing on old stones. Families based at Thorney Lakes Caravan & Camping Park, just over a mile away, could easily slot it into a morning visit alongside something with more immediate appeal.

There's no entrance fee and no set opening hours - you just turn up and walk in. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much you want to read about the history. Spring or autumn are best - you won't broil in the sun and the light's lovely for photography. Langport is the nearest proper town, though you'll want to bring supplies as there's nothing on site. It's a straightforward detour if you're already exploring the levels and flatlands round here, but wouldn't justify a special trip on its own.
