Muirhead Moss

Walk into Muirhead Moss and you're stepping into something properly different from the manicured parks you'd normally find near Dollar. This is a genuine woodland area - the kind of place where you actually feel like you've left civilisation behind, even though you're only a few minutes from town.

It's not a grand country estate or a formal forest walk with numbered trails and interpretation boards. What you get instead is a stretch of natural woodland where the paths wind through mature trees and the ground squelches underfoot after rain. Perfect for letting kids run about without worrying they'll disturb some precious lawn, or for a proper stomp if you're after a bit of fresh air without the fuss.

The main appeal is the woodland itself - just getting among the trees for an hour or so. There are paths through, though they're not always obvious, and depending on the season you'll either have a muddy mess or something more manageable. Winter can be grim, but spring and autumn are genuinely lovely here.

Walkers and families with older kids will get the most from it. It's the sort of place that works well as an add-on to a longer day out in the area rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Meadow View Glamping or Fossoway Cabins nearby, it's well worth knowing about - gives you somewhere to burn off energy that doesn't require a car journey. Allow an hour or so, depending on how aimless you're feeling.
