Murlough National Nature Reserve

Six thousand years of sand dunes stretch along the Dundrum Bay shoreline, creating Ireland's first nature reserve and one of its most important wildlife havens. The reserve protects a rare dune system that's home to over 600 plant species, including several rarities you won't find anywhere else in Ireland.

Walking the wooden boardwalks through the dunes feels like exploring another world. The paths wind between marram grass and wild orchids, with glimpses of Slieve Donard looming in the distance. Birdwatchers will have a field day - the mudflats attract thousands of migrating birds, particularly in winter when Brent geese arrive from the Arctic.

Families with young children should stick to the main boardwalk trail, which takes about an hour at a leisurely pace. More adventurous types can explore the longer dune paths, though these can be quite exposed on windy days. The beach section is lovely for a paddle, but swimming isn't really the point here.

Based in Newcastle, you're perfectly placed for this reserve alongside stays at nearby Murlough Cottage Caravan Park or the more upmarket Enniskeen Estate. The reserve works brilliantly as a morning activity before exploring Tollymore Forest Park, which is just a few miles inland. Serious nature lovers could easily spend half a day here, but casual visitors will get the gist in an hour or two.
