The first thing that strikes you about My Happy Hounds near Richmond is how seriously they take their dog welfare. This isn't some throwaway attraction tacked onto a farm - it's a genuine dog sanctuary where you can meet rescued hounds of all shapes and sizes, many of them given second chances after rough starts in life.

You'll spend time with the dogs here, learning their individual stories whilst they potter about, play, or simply enjoy being around people who actually care. It's interactive in the best way - no standing behind barriers watching distant animals. Families with children will find it proper engaging, especially if the kids have been nagging for a dog at home. Dog lovers obviously get the most from it, but even those who aren't obsessed will warm to the place once you start hearing where these animals came from.

The location works nicely as part of a Richmond-area break. Kiplin Country Park sits just four and a half miles away, so you could easily combine a morning here with a longer walk or picnic elsewhere. The countryside around Richmond is worth exploring on foot anyway.

Opening hours and admission details weren't clear when I checked, so ring ahead or check their social media before setting off - the last thing you want is driving out to North Yorkshire only to find the gates locked. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're actually spending time with the dogs rather than just popping in for photos.
