Mynydd Castlebythe

The walk up Mynydd Castlebythe rewards you with views that stretch across the Pembrokeshire coast in one direction and inland valleys in the other. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain - steep enough to raise your heart rate but manageable for most people in under an hour from the car park near Newport.

The summit itself is windswept and rocky, with an old stone cairn marking the top. On a clear day you can pick out the Preseli Mountains to the south and the coast towards Cardigan Bay. The approach is moorland, gorse-covered in places, with a well-trodden path that locals clearly know well.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination for sitting about - you're there for the views and the leg work. Families with children over eight or so could manage it, though the final push gets steep. Don't expect facilities at the top, and the weather can turn quickly across exposed moorland.

If you're based at The Hide or Trewrach - both excellent glamping spots just under six miles away - this makes a solid morning or early afternoon detour. It slots well into a broader Pembrokeshire walking itinerary without eating up your whole day. Allow two hours there and back including a breather at the top. Free to visit, naturally.

Worth it? Yes, if you're already in the area. It won't blow your mind, but it's genuine upland walking without the hike time some peaks demand.
