Mynydd Garn-fach

The climb up Mynydd Garn-fach rewards you with views across the Carmarthenshire valleys that stretch on for miles - proper dramatic on a clear day. It's not a difficult walk from Swansea, making it ideal if you want something achievable without committing to a full hill day. The peak itself is modest by Welsh standards, but that's partly what makes it decent for families with younger legs who aren't quite ready for the big mountains yet.

What you're doing here is essentially following established paths up open moorland, picking your way through bracken and grass to reach the trig point at the top. The views reward the effort - you can see right across to the Brecon Beacons on a good day. Allow an hour and a half each way if you're not rushing, though speedier walkers will do it in less.

It works particularly well as part of a longer exploration of the Carmarthenshire hills. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Black Ewe Glamping is barely over a mile away, or River View Touring Park if you prefer a more traditional caravan setup - you can knock this out in a morning and have the afternoon free. Kids who enjoy scrambling up slopes will get something out of it, but those expecting dramatic rock formations might find it a bit tame.

The access is free, obviously - it's a mountain. Go midweek if possible to avoid weekend crowds, and timing it for autumn when the light's golden gives the best photographs. Swansea makes a decent base town for supplies before heading out.
