Nancole Copse

A proper woodland walk through Hampshire's quieter side, Nancole Copse sits just outside Alton and delivers the sort of forest experience that doesn't demand much planning but rewards a lazy afternoon. The trees pack in close enough to block out most of the sky, with paths that meander through mixed woodland - nothing too manicured, which is rather the point. You get decent shade, birdsong, and the occasional clearing where light filters through properly.

Walkers will find it straightforward terrain, though I'd not call it spectacular. It's the kind of place you visit while staying at one of the nearby parks - Wigwam Holidays or Feather Down Manor Farm are both within easy reach - rather than driving across the county specifically for it. The copse works best if you've got restless kids who need burning off energy, or you're after a break from the campsite without a full-day commitment. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on how many times you stop to examine moss or turn over logs.

Timing matters. Early morning gives you the forest mostly to yourself, and autumn feels particularly right when the light goes that deep amber through the branches. Check locally before heading out - paths can be soggy after rain, and there's no visitor centre or facilities worth mentioning. It's the sort of walk that works because it asks nothing of you, not because it'll blow your mind. Honest, low-key, and fitting if you're basing yourself at Hampshire Hills or similar.
