National Museum of the Royal Navy, Hartlepool

The HMS Trincomalee sits in Hartlepool's marina like a ship frozen in time - and that's the whole point of this museum. You're walking through actual naval history here, not just reading about it behind glass. The main draw is exploring a genuine 18th-century frigate, clambering up narrow wooden stairs, ducking through low doorways, and getting a proper sense of what life at sea actually meant for sailors crammed into those spaces.

Inside the museum building itself, the exhibits cover everything from the Mary Rose to modern naval operations, though the ship itself is what stays with you. History enthusiasts will spend hours here, but families with younger kids might find it a bit intense - there's a lot of climbing and the spaces are genuinely cramped. Teenagers usually find it gripping though, especially if they're into engineering or maritime history.

It's free to wander the exterior and marina, but entry to the ship and main museum costs money (check the website for current prices). Allow a good two to three hours minimum if you're doing the full experience. The waterfront location means you can combine it with a coastal walk or grab fish and chips nearby.
